What Is SS 410 Stainless Steel?

◆

The material MANISHAWARE cutlery is made from — explained simply and honestly.

What SS 410 Means

SS 410 is a grade of stainless steel made mainly of iron with about 11.5–13.5% chromium and a small amount of carbon. It contains little to no nickel. It belongs to the "martensitic" family of stainless steels, which can be hardened — that is why it is widely used for cutlery, table knives and kitchen tools.

Why Chromium Matters

Chromium is what makes stainless steel "stainless." When exposed to air, it forms a thin, invisible protective layer on the surface that resists rust and staining in everyday kitchen use.

Why SS 410 Is Used for Cutlery

  • Hard and strong: SS 410 can be hardened, so forks, spoons and knives keep their shape and edges in daily use.
  • Nickel-free in practice: it contains little to no nickel.
  • Takes a fine finish: it polishes to a mirror shine and is a good base for PVD colour coatings like gold, rose gold, black and rainbow.
  • Magnetic: SS 410 is magnetic — a quick magnet test is normal and expected for this grade.

How SS 410 Compares to 304 (18/8) and 18/10

Grades like 304 (often called 18/8) and 18/10 contain about 18% chromium plus 8–10% nickel. The extra nickel gives them stronger resistance to corrosion, especially with acidic foods or long soaking, and they are non-magnetic. SS 410 has less chromium and almost no nickel, so it is harder but needs a little more care to keep its shine: wash it soon after use and dry it rather than leaving it wet.

What This Means for MANISHAWARE Cutlery

Every MANISHAWARE set is made from food-grade SS 410 stainless steel, with a mirror polish or a PVD colour finish. With simple care it stays rust-resistant and keeps its look for everyday use and special occasions. See our care guide for how to keep it looking its best, or read more on our Our Story page.

Common Questions About SS 410 Stainless Steel

What is SS 410 stainless steel?

SS 410 is a martensitic stainless steel with about 11.5–13.5% chromium and little to no nickel. It can be hardened, which makes it a common choice for cutlery and kitchen tools.

Is SS 410 the same as 18/10 stainless steel?

No. 18/10 has about 18% chromium and 10% nickel. SS 410 has about 12% chromium and almost no nickel. MANISHAWARE cutlery is SS 410.

Is SS 410 stainless steel safe for eating?

Yes. SS 410 is a stainless steel grade widely used for cutlery and food-contact kitchen tools.

Is SS 410 magnetic?

Yes. SS 410 is magnetic, unlike 304 (18/8) and 18/10, which are generally non-magnetic. A magnet sticking to your cutlery is normal for this grade.

Does SS 410 rust?

It is rust-resistant, not rust-proof. Leaving it wet for long periods, soaking it overnight or using bleach can cause spots. Wash and dry it after use and it will keep its shine.
